Things to do for Free
If you’re planning to visit us in one of our luxury holiday cottages in Loch Ness, you’re perhaps planning how you are going to spend your time here at The Highland Club.
Scotland is home to some of the most breath-taking natural beauties, some of which occur right on our doorstep..
Whether you’re visiting as a family, or a romantic getaway for two, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best things to do for free during your stay with us in Scotland.
The Commando Memorial
Located at Spean Bridge, just a half an hour drive from our luxury holiday accommodation, the Commando Memorial standing at 17ft depicts three Second World War soldiers stood proudly facing the direction of Ben Nevis.
The memorial was created on the instructions of Prime Minister at the time, Winston Churchill, and unveiled in 1952. It is one of Scotland’s best-known monuments.
The large inscription reads ‘United We Conquer’, dedicated to the men of the original British Commando forces. This is a thought-provoking and peaceful place with stunning views of the Scottish surroundings.
Harry Potter Viaduct
If you’re a fan of the wizarding world, this attraction is not to be missed. Situated at the head of Loch Shiel and an hour drive from our holiday cottages at The Highland Club, Glenfinnan Viaduct attracts thousands of visitors from around the world for its notable appearance in the Harry Potter films.
The Jacobite steam train runs from here to Fort William and Mallaig in summer months, and may pause on the viaduct (time permitting) allowing you to take in magnificent views. But for free, a short climb to the viewing point will allow you to take in the very same exquisite sights.
The Glennfinnan Viaduct also appears on some bank notes, so you’re guaranteed a memorable experience whether you’re a Harry Potter fan or not!
Falls of Shin
Willing to drive a little further afield? Situated about a 2-hour drive from The Highlands Club you will find the Falls of Shin.
Scotland is perfect if you are a lover of all thing’s nature. Not only are there forest trails to explore, the Falls of Shin are perhaps most famous for the leaping Atlantic salmon. As you take position on the viewing point, you’ll be able to watch the fish leap from the river as they try to pass the strong falls.

Glen Affric Forrest Park
As one of the largest ancient Caledonian pine woods in Scotland, Glen Affric features over 30 miles of forest and native wildlife
Located about an hour drive from your luxury holiday home at The Highland Club, if you’re an animal lover, you’d expect to see woodland birds, otters and if you visit during the autumn, you may even catch a glimpse of red deer stags.
